What is the KYT platform?

The KYT platform offers green enterprises and investors actionable insights into complex territorial realities, enabling them to manage risk and maximize opportunities. As a timely source of territorial intelligence, the KYT platform bridges the gap between available capital and the territories that need it most.

The KYT Platform is primarily aimed at entrepreneurs and investors in Nature-based Solutions (NbS), especially within the forest and land-use sectors.

Even if you work in a non-NbS sector, the data and insights provided on the KYT platform can be relevant for your industry. If you are interested in having our approach tailored to your specific needs, please contact us.

The platform is free to use. Premium features are coming soon, with monthly or annual plans.

Factors that negatively impact green enterprises (e.g., weak governance, environmental crime, violence, and land tenure issues).

Enabling conditions for green enterprises (e.g., ecological integrity, civil society activity, and effective local institutions).

No, a territory can simultaneously present high opportunity and high risk, as seen in municipalities with abundant natural capital existing alongside weak governance. It is therefore crucial for entrepreneurs and investors to understand the nature of these phenomena to seize opportunities and address concerns that impede the flow of high-integrity investments.

The KYT Index evaluates territorial risk and opportunity in all Brazilian municipalities. Its systemic approach considers six dimensions to understand how diverse factors combine and intersect to shape local contexts.

The municipal-level indicators that comprise the KYT Index use data from publicly-available databases provided by government agencies, research institutions, and civil society organizations. Click here for the full list of indicators and sources.

Indicators were chosen for their potential to capture key territorial risks and opportunities at the municipal level, while also allowing for comparability across Brazil’s diverse biomes and regions.

The selection process included an extensive literature review, benchmarks of standards and guidelines for risk assessment, and consultations with subject-area experts.

The calculation of territorial risk and opportunity for each municipality was achieved through Principal Component Analysis (PCA), a statistical method that detects patterns across indicators to generate composite scores. PCA was first applied within each of the six dimensions, and then these dimension-level results were averaged to produce the final result.

The KYT platform displays overall territorial risk and opportunity scores for each municipality, plus a dimension-level breakdown. For risk, higher scores indicate greater obstacles to green enterprise; for opportunity, higher scores indicate the presence of favorable conditions. Users should review both overall and per-dimension scores for a comprehensive understanding of territorial dynamics.

Annually, with some indicators refreshed more frequently as new data is released.

Users can interact with an AI assistant that helps to analyze municipal performance on the KYT Index. The assistant can explain how the Index works, discuss the results for a given municipality, and compare data between municipalities.

Your analysis and reports are only accessible to you. GBF administrators may collect anonymized and aggregated usage data to improve the platform, but they cannot view or recover your individual conversations with the AI assistant. No personal or project-specific content is stored or shared.

What is the difference between the Know Your Territory (KYT) method and the KYT-e platform?

The Green Bridge Facility developed the KYT method as a multifaceted approach for green enterprises and investors to manage territorial risk and opportunity. KYT-e is one component of this larger method, enabling users to explore and interact with the results of our municipal-level index.

As a timely source of territorial intelligence, KYT-e bridges the gap between available capital and the territories that need it most. Explore the use cases and blog to learn more about how to make KYT-e work for you.

KYT-e is primarily aimed at entrepreneurs and investors in Nature-based Solutions (NbS), especially within the forest and land-use sectors.

If you work in a non-NbS sector, the data and insights provided by KYT-e can still be relevant, especially if you rely on long-term permanence in territories. Please contact us if you are interested in having the KYT method tailored to your specific needs.

KYT-e is free to use. Premium features are coming soon, with monthly or annual plans.

Yes. Our Know Your Territory (KYT) method extends beyond the KYT-e platform, encompassing project and portfolio-level risk and opportunity assessments; bespoke risk management plans; stakeholder maps and engagement strategies; and integrity monitoring across project cycles and investment portfolios. These core services are complemented by: support for project design, partnership building, and matchmaking between investors and entrepreneurs.

What does it mean to “know your territory”?

“Knowing your territory” means understanding and managing territorial risks and opportunities that can impact green businesses. With strategic information from tools like KYT-e, investors and entrepreneurs can operate responsibly and effectively, ensuring their projects are not jeopardized by local vulnerabilities and do not worsen them.

Factors that negatively impact green enterprises (e.g., weak governance, environmental crime, violence, and land tenure issues). These risks represent systemic challenges inherent to a given region, extending beyond a single project’s boundaries. If properly understood and managed, the level of risk may be reduced or prevented in a given project or investment.

Enabling conditions for green enterprises (e.g., ecological integrity, civil society activity, and effective local institutions). These opportunities, if explored and targeted through projects, may materialize into positive regional impact and lead to mutually beneficial scenarios.

Yes. For example, a territory with abundant natural capital existing alongside weak governance could be considered as having high opportunity and high risk. Our KYT Index includes four classifications of territorial risk and opportunity, and municipalities can fall into any of these combinations (High risk + Low opportunity, Medium-low risk + High opportunity, etc.).

Developing risk management plans and strategies that address these complex territorial dynamics is crucial. Contact us to learn more about how we can support you in mitigating risks and seizing opportunities for high-integrity enterprises and investments.

What is the KYT Index?

The KYT Index evaluates territorial risk and opportunity in all Brazilian municipalities. Its systemic approach considers six dimensions to understand how diverse factors combine and intersect to shape local contexts.

The 70+ municipal-level indicators that comprise the KYT Index use data from publicly-available databases provided by government agencies, research institutions, and civil society organizations. Click here for the full list of indicators and sources.

Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was conducted to detect patterns across indicators and calculate territorial risk and opportunity scores for each municipality. PCA was first applied to each of the six dimensions that comprise the KYT Index. These dimension-level results were then averaged to produce the overall scores. Click here to learn more about the methodology.

KYT-e displays overall territorial risk and opportunity scores for each municipality, plus a dimension-level breakdown. For risk, higher scores indicate greater obstacles to green enterprise. For opportunity, higher scores indicate the presence of favorable conditions. Users should review both overall and per-dimension scores for a comprehensive understanding of territorial dynamics.

For the purposes of Principal Component Analysis (PCA), higher indicator values do not necessarily reflect higher territorial risk or opportunity. The municipal scores for each dimension derive from one or more “components”, for which indicators can receive positive or negative weights based on how they relate to one another.

Additionally, PCA assigns a specific “weight” to each indicator, which is applied universally across all municipalities. The impact that an indicator has on the final scores for a given dimension is determined by the magnitude of this weight.

Annually, with some indicators refreshed more frequently as new data are released. Future updates to KYT-e will include historical data for select indicators, enabling users to view trends over time.

Does the KYT-e platform have AI features?

Yes, an AI assistant helps users understand the KYT Index, analyze municipal performance, and compare results across municipalities.

Who has access to analyses and reports I produce in the KYT-e platform?
